Skillfully combining modernism and romanticism can be almost
impossible. The two ideas have many a competing aesthetic detail, and
putting them both into the same design usually yields a shoe that looks
like two different pieces of footwear smashed together. The Nicholas
Kirkwood Suede Chiffon Sandals, brand new for Spring 2011, may be the
most successful combination of romance and contemporary lines that I’ve
ever seen.
It’s difficult to make me like anything that’s covered in ruffles and
realized in sickeningly sweet baby pink, but if any shoe designer could
do it, it’s Kirkwood. And he did do it – these shoes manage to hit a
multitude of notes perfectly.
I don’t know where one might wear these shoes other than to a wedding in which you’re the bride, but hey, wedding season is
just around the corner. If you don’t want to wear the same pair of
champagne silk pumps that everyone else chooses, these are certainly the
type of shoes that will make a statement, particularly if you’re going
with a cocktail length dress and a nontraditional look overall
